About JCL

I’ve been in education for more than 30 years now. For the last 6 years I’ve been working as a Language teacher, Coordinator International activities and e-coach at Helen Parkhurst, a secondary school in Almere, The Netherlands.

Before this I have been a teacher trainer ( > 12 years) ,  the head of the Language Group of an Institute for School Improvement ( > 7 years) ,  the national coördinator for mother tongue teaching and teacher at several levels. For more details see my CV online at  http://jeroenclemensenglish.blogspot.com/

In this last phase of my professional life I want to have a new challenge.  I can see the rapid changes in the way people communicate in the 21st century. I also see that education is not ready to deal with these changes. Education didn’t step into the 21st century yet.

My interest has been always in Reading Comprehension. My challenge is to get a more clear understanding on Digital Literacy / Online Reading Comprehension.  So in the autumn of my professional life I will start PhD research project on Digital Literacy / Online Reading Comprehension. I will do this at the University of  Twente under the supervision  of Dr. Amber Walraven, dr Joke Voogt and Prof. dr. Jules Pieters.

This means from now on for the next 4 years I will work for 50% as a language teacher at Helen Parkhurst and for 50% as a researcher at University Twente. I hope this is a wise decision.

  1. I love the fact you have taken a new challenge. You will be able to use all that wisdom from years of teaching. I think it’s the best time to do a phd. I wish you well.

  2. Congratulations Jeroen on your new career pathway. My colleague and I are also starting to explore Online Reading Comprehension through the work of Professors Leu and Coiro. We are two secondary school teachers in Sydney, Australia so we will follow your progress with great interest.
